This month Viva Prana is offering free yoga classes in partnership with one of the best places to shop for everything fitness and yoga. Every Sunday in February you will find a Viva Prana yoga teacher at our neighborhood Athleta, right around the corner from the studio at 901 W. Weed Street. Classes are held from 9:30-10:30 AM, call ahead to reserve your spot, bring your own mat,  and hang out after to shop their new spring line or amazing sales. It won’t be a surprise that this month we are focusing on the heart chakra. The heart or the Anahata Chakra is associated with unconditional love, compassion, and joy. It is the source of deep and profound truths that cannot be expressed in words. When you experience warmth in your heart and discover it’s capacity to radiate out into the world you are experiencing the effect of this heart chakra bridging the gap between the manifest and the spiritual. You are in essence “feeling the love”. So how can we get more of this feeling, what do we do with it and how does it relate to the practice of yoga? 

The minute you step onto your mat you have initiated an act of self love, and not at all in the selfish sense. You are making a conscious choice to pause and connect to yourself through breath and movement. Through your practice, you begin to peel back the layers of tension and ego until you get a glimpse of your true essence, the You that is not defined by roles, titles, relationships, or the stories you tell yourself. When you experience this reunion with your true essence, there is a peace, a comfort, a love,  that will wash over you because you will discover that what you have been looking for has always been there. With a regular yoga practice your ability to access this sacred place develops and you will feel a shift because you will be more patient and loving with yourself and those around you. Forgiveness, compassion, and a stronger connection to yourself and the universe will rise within you.  

This month let’s look at back bends in the context of heart opening and focus on the back tension that might be keeping your heart chakra from opening. A warm up of cat-cow with some extra time spent in cat can access some of the thoracic (mid spine) congestion that could be limiting you in your heart openers. Another excellent warm up for heart openers is the position of eagle arms, then dynamically moving the elbows up and down to open between the shoulder blades and across the back. Now move toward opening the front of the chest in sphinx and cobra and see if you can keep the fullness in the back as you move into and out of your heart opening poses. Pause, observe, experience, breathe and feel the love from within - then Shine On!
